Unlearning, Relearning, and Releasing: The Key to Designing Your Life and Brand

When we think about building a personal brand, most people imagine logos, color palettes, and snappy taglines. But the truth is, none of those matter if you haven’t built the foundation of you.

People often ask me, “What does unlearning and relearning have to do with personal branding?” or feel like a therapy session. My answer is simple: everything. At Life Dezine, I believe in branding from the inside out. Before you build your brand, you have to build yourself.

The Problem: Feeling Stuck in Someone Else’s Dream

I’ve worked with so many founders who come to me frustrated and burnt out. They’re experiencing bottlenecks in their businesses—whether it’s scaling, connecting with their audience, or simply feeling inspired by the work they do.

The real issue often lies deeper than business strategies or processes. These founders are stuck in limiting beliefs, outdated mindsets, and patterns that no longer serve them. They’ve created businesses that don’t align with who they truly are, and now they feel trapped in something they didn’t even consciously choose.

It’s soul-sucking.

They come to me saying things like:

  • “This doesn’t even feel like mine anymore.”
  • “I built this because I thought it was what I was supposed to do, but I hate it now.”
  • “I feel like I’m living someone else’s dream.”
  • “I just show up and go through the motions, but my heart’s not in it.”
  • “I feel drained every single day.”
  • “I thought this would bring me freedom, but I feel more trapped than ever.”
  • “I made decisions based on money, not what I actually wanted.”
  • “I’m scared to change directions—I’ve already come this far.”

This is why unlearning, relearning, and releasing are so important. Before you can create a brand—or even a business—that’s truly yours, you have to reconnect with yourself.

The Guide: Why Unlearning Is Essential

Unlearning isn’t just about letting go of old habits. It’s about questioning the beliefs, stories, and systems that shaped you. Much of what we carry—whether from childhood, society, or past experiences—can limit us if left unexamined.

Creator Dan Koe does an amazing job going deep on this topic. On importance of personal evolution.

Relearning is about replacing those outdated ideas with empowering truths that align with the life and business you actually want to create.

And releasing? That’s the spiritual part. Letting go of what no longer serves you is a process of trust, faith, and renewal. It’s not easy, but it’s transformative.

As Dan Koe says, “Build and write in public.” This isn’t just about transparency; it’s about committing to a journey of growth and self-discovery—one that inevitably shapes the brand you’ll share with the world.

The Plan: Building Your Brand from the Inside Out

At Life Dezine, I use a framework that focuses on designing your life and brand holistically. Here’s how it works:

  1. First, Build the Person Before we dive into your brand, we start with you. What are your values, strengths, and passions? What limiting beliefs or stories are holding you back? This is where the unlearning begins.
  2. Then, Build the Brand Once we’ve cleared the internal clutter, we can create a brand that’s authentic, aligned, and deeply personal. Your brand becomes an extension of who you are, not a mask you wear to fit in.
  3. Craft a Life That’s Truly Yours Life Dezine isn’t about spoon-feeding you a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s about guiding you to tap into your unique strengths and power so you can craft a life—and a brand—that are truly your own.

The Lessons I Learned

  1. Growth Requires Letting Go You can’t step into your next chapter while clinging to the past. Unlearning outdated beliefs is essential for personal and professional growth.
  2. Your Brand Is an Extension of You. If you’re disconnected from yourself, your brand will feel disconnected too. Building your brand starts with building yourself.
  3. Curiosity Is Key. The more curious you are about yourself—your strengths, values, and desires—the more aligned your decisions will be.
  4. There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Solution.True alignment comes from crafting a path that’s uniquely yours, not following someone else’s blueprint.
  5. Release Perfectionism Perfection Is a Trap. For years, I chased perfection because deep down, I didn’t feel like I was enough. Perfection is unattainable—it keeps you stuck in fear, procrastination, and self-doubt. Releasing the need to be perfect allowed me to embrace progress instead. It reminded me that I don’t have to have it all figured out to be valuable, worthy or start.

Lessons You Can Apply

  1. Start Questioning Your Beliefs Take some time to reflect on the stories you’re telling yourself. Are they empowering or limiting? What would happen if you let them go?
  2. Relearn What Matters to You Make a list of what truly excites and inspires you. How can you bring more of that into your life and work?
  3. Release What No Longer Serves You Identify the habits, relationships, or beliefs that are holding you back. Commit to letting go—even if it’s scary.
  4. Design Your Life First Before you think about your brand, think about the life you want to live. Your brand should reflect the person you’re becoming, not just the work you’re doing.
  5. Embrace Curiosity Approach this journey with an open mind. The more curious you are, the more you’ll discover about yourself and the possibilities ahead.

Closing Thoughts: Branding from the Inside Out

Your brand isn’t just about what you do—it’s about who you are. To create a life and brand that feel authentic, aligned, and fulfilling, you have to start from within.

Unlearning, relearning, and releasing are part of a spiritual journey, one that requires courage, vulnerability, and trust. But the result? A life and brand that are deeply, unapologetically yours.

Don’t settle for a business that feels like a cage or a brand that feels like a mask. Start with you, and let everything else flow from there.
